Sports Town will review the 2012-13 school year during July. Today we are visiting the girls volleyball season.

Mt. Lebanon put it all together in the WPIAL Class AAA Tournament with the help of a transfer. Below is the South story that appeared after the Blue Devils captured the title.

Rachael Amoroso didn't know what to expect when her family moved from Colorado into the Mt. Lebanon School District during the summer.

"The WPIAL was new to me," said Amoroso, a 5-7 senior. "I didn't really know what to expect. We were ranked No. 9 going into the season, so I knew winning a title wouldn't be easy."

The same was true for Blue Devils coach Jeff Schilling and his quad. They didn't know what to expect from an out-of-state player who was a member of the junior varsity last year.

Most feel the PIAA Class A playoff match between Greensburg Central Catholic and Clarion, held at Butler High School, decided the state championship.

Unfortunately for Greensburg Central, it was the semifinals. And the Centurions fell short in a five-set marathon.

"It was unfair to have us in the same half of the bracket," Greensburg Central coach Heather Meyer said. "Everybody felt we were the best two teams in the state."

Clarion, the District 9 champion, placed second in the state the past two years and finished the regular season No. 1 in the PVCA state rankings. Greensburg Central, the WPIAL champion, was ranked No. 2. The two teams had met earlier in the season and split two games.

Hopewell and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart had the most memorable seasons in the West. Hopewell made a return trip to the WPIAL Class AA finals, while OLSH was a third-place finisher in Class A.

Hopewell entered the Class AA tournament as the favorite and top seed in the 21-team bracket, but fell short of defending its title after losing 3-0 to Mars in the championship match at Chartiers Valley High School.

"They played exceptionally well and we didn't play up to our expectations," Hopewell coach Terry Borkovic said. "That translates into us taking home the silver medal and they go home with the gold."

Hopewell held a 10-9 lead in the first set, but Mars scored 11 of the next 14 points to take a 20-13 lead and eventually won 25-21. Mars took charge from that point and posted victories of 25-18 and 25-17.

In June, a football standout from Beaver County committed to Akron.

A month later, another did the same.

Beaver Falls senior defensive lineman Brock Boxen made a verbal commitment to Akron earlier this weekend. Boxen, who is 6-foot-3, 250 pounds, chose the Zips over offers from Pitt and Connecticut.

Rivals ranks Boxen the No. 26 senior in Pennsylvania.

Boxen is the second player from Beaver County to commit to Akron and coach Terry Bowden this summer. Blackhawk quarterback Chandler Kincade pledged his services last month.

North: Fox Chapel wins WPIAL Class AAA title

When it came to the 2012 WPIAL field hockey Class AAA tournament, there weren't too many one-sided games when the competition got under way in the latter stages of October.

In the girls' Class AAA semifinals, Penn-Trafford went on the road and earned a 3-2 double-overtime victory over top-seeded Peters Township. In the other semifinal, Fox Chapel stunned No. 2 seed North Allegheny, 1-0, at the Tigers' Newman Stadium.

That meant Fox Chapel and Penn-Trafford -- the two lower seeds -- would meet for the WPIAL championship. In years past, the championship game had been held at Fox Chapel. But in 2012, the title game was moved to North Allegheny's Newman Stadium.

With the game scoreless at the end of regulation, Fox Chapel's Sammi Pitz pounced on a loose ball just outside the Penn-Trafford crease and drove it past Penn-Trafford goalie Harry Miller for the game's only score at the 3:09 mark of the first overtime.

It wasn't the way the Peters Township field hockey team wanted to end the 2012 season.

But despite two goals from Christian Schratz that wiped out two one-goal deficits against Penn-Trafford in a WPIAL semifinal, the Warriors earned a 3-2 victory over the Indians on an Amanda Steffey goal.

The loss ended the Indians' record at 15-3, while Penn-Trafford went on to the championship game, where the Warriors would play yet another overtime game. This time, though, the Warriors fell to Fox Chapel, 1-0, and that loss ended their season. It was the second time Peters Township had fallen to the Warriors this season.

In many cases, it takes just one break to decide a field hockey game. Penn-Trafford can vouch for that.

The Warriors had 18 penalty-corner opportunities (16 in regulation) in their WPIAL championship game against Fox Chapel this past October at North Allegheny's Newman Stadium. But each opportunity was turned aside by a sticky Fox Chapel defense, and the game went to overtime.

It didn't last long as Fox Chapel made the most of a penalty corner at 3:09 of the extra period when Sammi Pitz pounced on a ball that had deflected off Warriors' goalie Harry Miller and drove it into the net, giving the Foxes the WPIAL Class AAA championship.

"It's absolutely disappointing," said Penn-Trafford coach Cindy Dutt. "They are really good on their defensive corners, and we just couldn't convert. And, it was a disappointment."
